MILTON FIELDING MEEK

Milton F. Meek was born 12 Jan. 1856 in Schyler County Missouri. His parents were Jefferson Richard Meek and Sophia R. Webster. He was named after the middle names of two uncles who were visiting the family when he was born, William Milton Meek and John Fielding Meek, sons of Jeremiah and Catherine Meek. At age 9 he moved with his father and step mother (Celestina Bradshaw), to Shelby County Missouri where he lived until 1878.

He was the ninth of ten children. His mother died on 2 Oct 1858. He Moved to Otoe County Nebraska by horse back in 1878 where his brother John Gidion had preceded him in about 1873.

He married Grace Ella Winyard on 13 Sep 1881. She was born 3 Dec. 1962. They were married at the Congregation Church in Camp Creek Nebr. The minister was Rev. Mason. His brother John had married Grace's sister Amelia M. Winyard (Carr). Milton farmed on part of the old Winyard homestead south of Nebraska City. This was the same house where Grace was born. They had one son Carleton Lee Meek born 2 Aug 1882 on the farm. Milton retired in 1904 and they moved to Peru Nebraska.

On 23 Aug 1906 Milton bought a Lumber Company in Peru and formed a corporation called "Meek Lumber Company". They lived next door to their son Carleton and his wife on Main Street.(This was later changed to 5th street. The address of their son's house was 908 5th street.)

In 1924 they bought another lumber yard in University Place near Lincoln Nebraska. Milton and Grace moved to Lincoln in 1926. They rented a house at 2957 No. 48th street. Later they rented a house at 2726 No. 49th street. They purchased a home at 1220 No. 46th Street in Sep. 1927. This was Mount Forest addition, Block 10, Lots 8 and 9. This was purchased from Ernest D. Webber and his wife in exchange for some property in Sidney Nebraska. Later they struck oil on the property in Sidney.

Milton moved in with his son's family at 5204 Madison when Grace died 5 Jun 1931. He lived there until his death on 17 Aug 1939 at 1:40 A.M. in his son's home. The doctor was Dr. R. Crook. He was buried at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln Neb. on 19 Aug 1939. The home on 46th street was kept in the family until Jul 1945. (Carleton's Daughter Ruth E. Meek and her husband Seymour B. Lee lived in this house from 1935-1940.)
