Joshua, son of John Meek

by Carleton L. Meek - submitted by Bob Lee

Joahua, (D29) was born about 1780 or 81 probably in Westmoreland Co. Pa., as his father owned land there . He moved with his father to Henry Co. Ky in 1788, settling near the present site of New Castle, then known as Meek's station.

There he lived until after the death of his father which occured in 1803. He being the youngest of the four brothers , inherited the home place from his father's estate. He sold this land on Jan. 12th 1807 to John Samuels, as shown in Deed book 3,page 16, for the small sum of five shillings, being only a Quit Chaim, called Deed of Doubtful Title.The discription of the land was as follows:

On Drennens Creek, containing an estimated 100 acres. Beginning at a hickory and buckeye, thence south 133 poles to hickory and Mulberry, thence west 120 poles to a sugar tree, buckeye and ironwood, thence north 133 poles to a rock on the north bank of a branch Drennens Creek and corner to Christopher Hardwick, thence east 120 poles to the beginning.
He moved to Wayne Co. Ind. where he purchased land on June 17,1813. From a deed record in Wayne Co. and the settling of his estate in the same county we find his wife's name to be Jane W.(no date shown--Ed.) and his children as follows: Margaret B.,Jefferson Richard, Nancy, Jacob, Martha, Lucy L., Mary and Jane G.

He died Sep 3 1856, and was buried in the Elkhorn Cemetary southwest of Richmond. His grave is plainly marked with a marble slab, in good condition considering its age, which reads;

Joshua Meek died Sept. 3rd 1856, in the seventy fifth year of his age. His wife Jane Meek died in Wayne Co. May 19th 1886.
