Seven Miles from Rapids City on Box Elder, Wednesday, February 11, 1914, Ruth Amanda Meek,
age eighty-four years, six months and thirteen days, of old age.
Grandma Meek was born in Virginia, July 29, 1829. At the age of seven she was taken by her
parents to Springfield, Indiana, where she married L. N. Meek, November 16, 1845.
To them were born eleven sons and two daughters, of these four sons and one daughter survive
her. When the youngest child Ollie, now Mrs. Henry Weeks, was eleven months old, Mother Meek
was called upon to yield to the Great Beyond her beloved husband, to whom she remained loyal
through all these forty-two years.
From Springfield Mrs. Meek came to Iowa, where her sons still live, and from there to Rapid City
about five years ago. One son, W. Meek arrived from Des Moines, Ia., just before his mother
died.
Mrs. Meek was one of the first members of the Box Elder Busy Bees, always being interested in
whatever was helpful. Though she had outlived her three score years and ten she will be greatly
missed by all who knew her. At an early age she became a member of the Methodist church and to
this faith she always adhered with the strictest fidelity. A faithful wife, a devoted mother, a
true friend and citizen, her life was one grand benediction to her children and friends. No
sacrifice was to great for her to make for her children, no deed of love within her power was
even withheld from a friend.
The funeral services were held yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Weeks,
conducted by Rev. W. H. Hood. A quartette was sung by Mr. And Mrs. W. C. Bennett, John Van
Vlack and Will Jackson. A solo was also sung by Miss Alice Basim, Miss Ora Taylor being at
the piano. There were beautiful flowers, among which was a floral tribute from the Busy Bees.
The bearers were Messrs. George Perrigo, H. C. Gordes, John M. Haas, W. C. Bennett, Will Scott
and C. V. Phillips. Interment was made in Mountain View Cemetery.
