Basil Meek's Pension Application

Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th June 1832.
On the 24th day of Feby 1834 personally appeared before John P. Ford – a Justice of the peace for said County of Henry Bazil Meek a resident of Henry County aforesaid (who is prevented (which I certify) from appearing in Court when open by reason of old age and bodily infirmity) aged ninety three years, who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his Oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 – That he entered the Service the 10th day of July 1777 under and with Capt. Hugh Stinson, under Col McDaniel and Served until the 10th Nov. 1777 under said Colonel when he was discharged for a time. that he joined said Stinson in the State of Virginia near Winchester and marched to Scioti where a battle was had with the Indians and (after the battle and which was during the term first mentioned) this applicant went being thus discharged to Red Stone fort and there remained until the Spring of 1778. he states that he was ordered to be ready for the Indians during the Winter of 1777 & 1778 but for the Service above he claims a pension only, together with his services hereafter mentioned – Nigh. {word?} That in May 1778 he again entered the Service under said Capt. Hugh Stinson under Col McDaniel and served

for four months constant Service which was in fighting with the Indians, in pursuit of them, and often times destitute of food or clothing that he was discharged and went to fort pitt –

That in May 1779 the 1 or 2 day there of he again entered the Service under said Capt. Stinson under Col. Vallandingham and Crawford and continued with said Stinson but a short time, then went and was transferred immediately Under and to Capt Wright and Continued with him till 1 July 1779, was then transfered to Capt. Ricketts or Gipson and continued with them for two month, till 10 or 11 September 1779 and was finally discharged 16 miles below Pitt at Matons fort – during this last tour of Service We were ranging the country against and in persuit of the Indians – We were called Spies and Rangers – that the Country through which We passed was about Fort Pitt, Martins fort. Red Stone fort {unclear} that he served much more than here enumerated, but for the 12 months Service, he claims a pension

That during each Term he was a private and was not employed in any civil pursuit that he has no discharge in his possession being lost that there is no surviving witness as he knows of who can testify to the above facts and that he was born in the year 1740 in Maryland that he has no record of his age that he was living in the County of Frederick State of Virginia when he was Called into the Service or when he entered the same and that

he has lived in Henry County aforesaid for 25 – years And previous therto in Virginia that he was Called into the Service as he has Above Stated and that he was A Volunteer his Officers and General Circumstances of his services Are as Stated in this declaration that he received a discharge which is lost & he has forgotten who gave it that he is known to Edmund P. Thomas in his neighborhood who can testify to his Character for Varacity and their belief of his services As A Revolutionary Soldier that he herby relinquishes every claim Whatever to a pension or an annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of any Agency in Any State

Henry County, do hereby certify that We are well acquainted with Bazil Meek, who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration and We believe him to be ninety three years of age, and that he is reported and believed in the neighborhood where he resides, to have been a soldier of the Revolution, and that we concur in that opinion.---Edmund P. And the said John P. Ford a Justice of the peace for said County do hereby ^ declare his opinion after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier and served as he states; and the said John P. Ford a Justice as aforesaid further certifies that it appears to him, that Edmund P. Thomas and Jesse Meek – who has also signed the said affidavit and certificate, are residents in the County of Henry aforesaid, and that there statement is entitled to credit, and that they are credible persons. and that said Bazil Meek is unable to attend Court because of bodily infirmity John P. Ford

P Thomas Clerk of the Court of Henry County do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of said Court (before said Justice) in the matter of the application of Bazil Meek for a pension.
