THE MEEK FAMILY OF MOON TOWNSHIP
Joshua Meek was born in the colony of Virginia, in 1731, and lived to the age of 87. He died in 1818. His mother was a member of the Lee family of Virginia. They had 2 children. This man seems, from all the information I can find, to be the father of Joshua Jr., John and Jacob Meek, who received patents for land in Moon and Findlay Townships, Joshua and John Meek being the men who acquired the plots in Moon Township. Joshua Meek the father of Jeremiah and Basel Meek, inherited the plot of ground on which Old Sharon Church, our High School, and several farms, and many homes, are now located. From the Allegheny County Court records, (see accompanying map) Joshua Meek 416 1/2 Acres. Surveyed, April 15, 1785, on Virginia Certificate. Patented, September 24, 1787 to same on Warrant to accept, September 14, 1788. The Meek brothers were forced to flee from raiding Indians, to Fort Redstone, now Brownsville, for safety where they remained for 4 years, but returned when their warrant was issued in 1788. Jeremiah Meek was born 1804, died 1889. His wife was born in 1808 and died 1873. Basel Meek was born 1810, died 1902, and Nancy Hood Meek was born 1826, and died 1906.
