Jeremiah Lee Meek

12. Jeremiah Lee Meek was born in 1780 in PA. Moved to Wayne County, IN in 1806. He died 23 May 1842 in Wayne Co., IN.
He wrote a journal in 1837 but provided very little family information. He mentions a brother, John but does not name his wife or children. The Palladium newspaper stated in 1866 that it obtained the journal from his son Morton. 1837 Journal of Jeremiah Lee Meek He stated "In the month of November, 1806, I left my father's house in Kentucky and came to Ohio with the widow Grimes' family...". He further stated that in April 1807 he went to Whitewater, IN to join his father.

He listed in the 1820 census of Wayne Co., IN as Jeremiah Meck age 26-45. Also listed are males 0-10, 10-16, 10-18, 16-25 and females 10-16.

He listed in the 1830 census of Wayne Co., IN as Jeremiah L. Meck age 40-50. Also listed are males 5-10, 2 each 10-15, 15-20 and females 5-10, 10-15, 40-50.

He is listed in the 1840 census of Wayne TWP, Wayne Co., IN as J. L. Meek age 60-70. Also listed was a male age 15-20 and females age 5-10, 15-20, 20-30 and 50-60.

He married Rebecca Grimes on 18 Jun 1807 in Butler Co., OH. According to his journal in the fall after his marriage in Ohio he returned to Indiana and settled on 80 acres of land that his father had entered for him. Jeremiah Lee Meek and Rebecca Grimes had the following children:

31. William Meek was born about 1808 in Kentucky. Traditional genealogies indicate that he married Sally Fouts the daughter of Daniel Fouts. However, this is not proven. His wife's name is Sarah in the census records. He is listed in the 1850 census of Wayne TWP, Wayne Co., IN. He is listed in the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Newton, Jasper Co., IA. Note: There is no proof that the William Meek in the census records was the son of Jacob Meek. Note: The 1850 census of Wayne TWP, Wayne Co., IN lists William Meek, age 42 KY, Sarah, age 41 IN, Rebecca, age 19, James, age 17, Emiline (M), age 15, William W., age 12, Sarah, age 8 and Indiana, age 2/12. The 1860 census of Jasper Co., IA lists WIlliam age 52 KY, Sarah age 40 IN. William age 20 IN and India age 7 IN. This family is also listed in the 1870 census of Jasper County.

- 102. James Grimes Meek was born about 1834 in Indiana. He was buried in Ottumwa, IA according to traditional genealogies. He may be the person named J. G. Meeks 30 IN in the 1860 census of Newton, Jasper Co., IA which where his father lived. Living with him were Mary age 39 VT and Julia age 1. The ages and places of birth are not consistant with later censuses. However, census records are often wrong. Inaddition, his uncle was close by in Jefferson County. He may be the person named J. G. Meeks 36 IN in the 1870 census of Wapello Co., IA. Living with him was Mary J. age 30 CN, Julia age 11 and Walter G. age 6. These same people are also in the 1880 census of Wapello County where his name is James.

- 104. William W. Meek was born about 1838 in Indiana. He resided with his parents in 1860.

- 106. Indiana Meek was born about 1850 in Indiana. She resided with her parents through 1870.
32. Franklin Meek was born about 1815 in Indiana. He married Elizabeth Lamb, daughter of William Lamb, 1 Jan 1838 in Wayne Co., IN. He is listed in the index of the 1850 census of Round Prarie TWP, Jefferson Co., IA. He is listed in the index of the 1860 census of Fairfield, Jefferson Co., IA. Elizabeth is listed in the 1880 census of Fairfield, Jefferson Co., IA living with her daughter Fannie. Traditional genealogies indicate that he moved to Des Moines, IA. However, the census records tend to contradict that statement. He was 54 in 1870 and does not appear in the 1880 census.
- 111. William Meek was born about 1841 in Indiana. He married Frances ______. They are listed in the 1880 census of Blackhawk TWP, JeffersonCo., IA. It is not certain that this is William, son of William No. 10.

- 119. Wright L. Lancaster was born 2 Oct 1830 in Wayne Co., IN. He died about 1871. He married Rebecca J. Osborn 18 Mar 1851 in Wayne County. She was the daughter of Chatfield Osborn and Penelope Davenport.

34. Morton Clay Meek was born on 5 Jun 1813 in Richmond, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census of Wayne TWP. Wayne Co., IN. His children through Jesse are listed. He died on 4 Apr 1894. He married Jane Hunt 29 Nov 1838 in Wayne Co., IN. She was born about 1820.

35. Jeremiah Lee Meek was born 9 Jul 1819 Wayne Co., IN. He died 27 Feb 1909 in Wayne Co., IN. He married Sarah Poole Wilson 31 Aug 1848 in Wayne Co., IN. She was born 15 Mar 1824 New Castle Co., DE. (There was a Jeremiah Meeks, age 31, listed in the 1850 census of Monroe TWP, Clark Co., IN. Also listed were Elizabeth, age 31, Lucy, age 12, Nancy, age 10, Malinda, age 5 and George 1850.) He is listed in the 1900 census of Richmond, IN with Sarah P. Meek born in 1824.
36. Alexander Meek was born about 1827. He was likely the person reported in the 1850 census of Wayne TWP, Wayne Co., IN, age 23, living with Jesse Meek. Jesse was likely the son of John Meek, son of John Meek born in 1754.
