James A. Dickey

By Christopher A. Meek Meek

54. JAMES ALLEN DICKEY was born on 3 Oct 1821 in Ross Co., OH according to his tombstone. He died 19 Nov 1902 in Polk Co., IA according to his death certificate. He is buried at the United Brethren Cemetery in Polk City. His probate record names his wife, Catherine Ann, and his children. He served in the Army from 11 May 1864 to 15 Sep 1864 in Co. H, 44th IA Vol. Inf. according to GAR records.

He married (1) Effie Isabel Cunningham on 8 Jun 1841 in Ross County according to marriage records. She was born on 28 Jan 1815 according to her tombstone. She was the daughter of William Cunningham and Jane Love. They are listed in the 1850 census of Ross Co., OH. They first appeared in the Polk County census in 1860 Delaware TWP. They are listed in the 1870 census of Madison TWP., Polk Co., IA. They continue to be listed in the 1880 census of Madison Township. Effie died on 16 Jun 1889 in Polk Co., IA.

He married (2) Mrs. Anna White about 1889 according to his obituary. In the 1895 Iowa census for Madison Township his wife is named Catherine. They are listed in the 1900 census of Madison TWP., Polk Co., IA where his wife is named Catherine A. She was born in 1826 in Illinois. Since James Obituary does not mention his wife Catherine Ann it is assumed that Mrs. Anna White and Catherine are the same person.

James and Effie's children are listed in his obituary.

Early research located James and Effie Dickey in the 1850 census of Ross Co., OH in dwelling 2870. Daughter Mary was not listed and daughter Eliza was named Emily. Other names and dates were very close to the known family. It seemed perfectly logical that this was the same family from Polk Co., IA.

However, an addition census record from Ross County was located which contained an almost identical family living with Jane Cunningham age 60 in dwelling 2972 in South Salem. The husbands name was Joseph A. Dickey and the wife was Isabela Dickey. Mary is included and Eliza is listed instead of Emily. Except for Joseph's name, the names and ages match perfectly with the known family.

Oral family history records Effie's parents as Jane Love and William Cunningham. Living next to Jane Cunningham in 1850 was William Cunningham age 27. This may have been her son.

There is a 1841 Ross County marriage record for James Dickey and Isabel Cunningham.

Effie Dickey was known in records both as Effie I. Dickey and Isabel E. Dickey. While the discrepancy in the two 1850 census records is troubling it appears that James and Effie Dickey are the people living with Jane Cunningham in 1850.

A troubling fact about the 1870 census for James Dickey is that both Mary and William are listed despite the fact that are listed separately in thier own homes.

This census indicated that Catherine was the mother of 10 children 5 of whom were living. It also indicates that James' father was born in North Carolina which conflicts with the 1880 census.

James A. Dickey Dead

Father of the veteran correspondent of R-N. Samantha Eslick who died Sept. 16, 1902.

James A. Dickey was born in Ross County, Ohio, October 3, 1821 and died at Polk City, Iowa, November 19, 1902, aged 81 years, 1 month, and 16 days. He was of Scotch stock and all his early relatives in America were Presbyterians. He joined the United Brethren church in his childhood and was licensed to preach more than 62 years ago. He taught several terms of school in Ross and Highland counties, Ohio, while in his minority. He was married to Miss Effie Cunningham, in Greenfield, Highland county, in 1841. Four children were born to them, Samantha Eslick (the veteran correspondent of the Register-News) died, Sept. 10, 1902; William Dickey; Mary Helms; and Eliza Stevens. This first Mrs. Dickey died in June 1889, and he was married to Mrs. Anna White, of Polk City, late in that year which place was his home till his death. Mr. Dickey came to Polk County, Iowa in 1850. He lived in Polk County over 52 years and in Madison Township nearly 43 years.

He was elected justice of the peace in that township ten different times. He was a soldier of the Great war, serving the company with the four Hopkins, 4 Pierces, 3 Eslicks, Keith Housholder, Boggs, Jim Williams and a host of other whose names Madrid will continue to cherish many years after this. Though Mr. Dickey was one of the most unpretentious persons it is doubtful if any person among could point to as many relatives who do and who have held responsible positions as he could. In an extensive article on the death of General and Chief Justice Lyle Dickey, of Illinois, a Chicago paper said "Perhaps every position of trust in this government below the vice president had been borne by some one of the Dickey family." Later on, that article said: "The Rev. James Dickey (.......Dickey's Uncle). The Generals father preached to the same congregation thirty years and William Dickey preached to another 38 years. Both in Ross county, Ohio, Henry county, Iowa, was so named for a double cousin of Mr. Dickey, Colonel James Dickey Henry.

Mr Dickey had not been well since last winter. Since August his suffering was dreadful. He often asked that death would take him quick. It was his request that old soldiers be his pall bearers. Members of the Madrid Post, Hull, Simmons, Van Zandt, Wylie, Lamb and Warden performed this service as true comrade will. His funeral was preached by Rev. Crawford, of the Congregational church, himself an old soldier of the 9th Iowa Inft., the regt. that made Herron a general. He was....in the Polk City vault.
Madrid Register-News

Obituary of Mrs. Eslick

Samantha Jane Dickey Eslick was born in Highland county, Ohio, March 31st, 1842. Moved to Polk County with her parents in 1850. She was married to the late John Eslick in 1871, and died Sept. 16, 1902. Age 60 years, 5 months and 27 days. She united with the church when a child and has lived a consistent Christian ever since. The latchstring on the door of the kind old pioneer Eslick Dome has always hung on the outside when the door was not turned toward and great numbers of hungry strangers as well as neighbors, friends, and relatives have satisfied their wants at her generous and bountiful board.

Both before and after the war she taught in the public schools. She has been regarded all her life as a good and safe counselor.

During the last 12 years she has been a constant contributor of news to the Madrid Register-News. Editor Heath once told a Polk County man that her items alone were worth many times the price of the paper.

Her last hours, like all her life, were patient and peaceful, only once during her two weeks sickness did she complain of pain.

Her funeral was preached by Rev. Walcott in the Hopkins Grove church. She was laid to rest by the side of much loved sister-in-law, Mrs. Biddy Snyder, who died last spring. She said she wanted to be laid by Aunt Biddy. She had no children., but chief mourners were observed her neighbors, not of kin, some of those young neighbors: young women have been heard to say that their own mother could not be better to them than Mrs. Eslick has been.
