1. Joseph Meek was born in 1744. (The source unknown and apparently not supported by records.) His place of birth is unknown. His probate was ordered 15 Dec 1807 in Washington Co., VA. The first mention of him in Washington County was 1 Dec 1781 when he signed a petition. His first recorded land purchase was in 1787 although it is assumed that he owned land prior to that.
It has been suggested that Joseph Meek came to Washington Co., VA with the widow of Thomas Meek born 1708 who died in Washington Co., MD in 1777. Thomas Meek owned land in Washington Co., VA as early as 1752. That the two families resided in the same neighborhood is interesting and there may have been an association between them. However, DNA tests on their descendants prove that the two families were not related.
Some information has been taken from The Meek Family of Washington Co., VA by Danny Morris Fluhart, 1989. This book contains the research of the prominent Meek genealogist Joseph L. Meek of Washington, D.C.
