Lewis Meek

Morgan Co., WV

By Christopher A. Meek

116. Lewis Meeks died in Berkeley Co., WV.

It is not known why H. B. Meek thought that Lewis moved to Highland Co., OH. No record of him has been found at this point in time. Morgan Co., WV is in close proximity to areas of Maryland where other Meek men were reported to have lived.

"Morgan County Deed Book 3, page 28 contains an indenture dated 25 Sept. 1839. It is between Elias Barker and Elizabeth his wife and Nancy Unger, heirs and distributees of Lewis Meeks, late of Berkeley County deceased of the one part and Jacob Reichard of the other part. Elias and Nancy sold interest in a tract in Morgan County (formerly Berkeley County) ...one tenth part each...106 acres about 2 miles east of Bath, formerly occupied by the above named Lewis Meeks and at present in the occupancy of Tolbert Rockwell (Ed: wife is Sarah Meeks daughter of Lewis Meeks, Jr.)

Jacob Reichard was Clerk of the Court of Morgan County when, in 1840, he apparently was assembling the Lewis Meeks property rights. The Martinsburg Gazette of 27 Feb 1840 reported a suit; Jacob Reichard v. William Meeks, Jeremiah Meeks, Phoebe (Meeks) College, Sally (Sarah Meeks) Rockwell and Jonathan Barker (for Delilah Meeks, deceased). The property in question is listed in the Morgan County Land Book for year 1820 in ownership of Lewis Meeks, Jr. heirs, 106 acres two miles east of the courthouse."
