John Meek 1772

1. John Meek was born about 1772. Some sources indicate that he was born in Ellicott's Mill, MD. However, there is some indication that his father was already in Pennsylvania at the time of his birth. He died in 1849 in Morgan Township, Owen Co., IN and he was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. He was called "Little John". He lived with his parents in Moon TWP, Allegheny Co., PA. About 1788 the family moved to Henry Co., KY. About 1812 John moved to Wayne Co., IN. He later moved to Henry Co., IN before returned to Wayne County. In 1832 he moved to Owen Co., IN.

He married Margaret Erwin on 1 Jul 1792 in Shelby Co., KY according to marriage records. She died about 1820 in Henry Co., IN. John Meek and Margaret Erwin had the following children:

11. William Meek was born 29 May 1793. The identity of this person is uncertain. There were two men named William Meek in the 1830 and one in the 1840 censuses of Henry Co., IN. It seems probable that one of these men was this William.
12. Joseph Meek was born on 3 Mar 1795 in Henry Co., KY.
13. Sarah (Sally) Meek was born in 1797 in Henry Co., KY. She died in Dec 1878 in Wabash, IN. She is connected to her father through a 1920 letter written by her brother Basil. She married John Smith on 12 Feb 1816 in Wayne Co., IN.
14. Mary (Polly) Meek was born in 1800 in New Castle, KY. She married Daniel Fraley on 25 Apr 1816 in Wayne Co., IN.
15. Jeptha Meek was born on 3 Nov 1803 in New Castle, Henry, KY.
16. Jesse Meek was born on 27 May 1806 in New Castle, Henry Co., KY. He is connected to her father through a 1920 letter written by his brother Basil. He is listed in the 1850 census of Wayne TWP, Wayne Co., IN. They were listed in the 1860 census of Richmond, Wayne Co., IN. Also list were Eliza Adams, age 20 and Alexander Meek age 23. They were listed in the 1870 census of Wayne TWP, Owen Co., IN. His son William was in all three censuses. He was a bookkeeper and merchant. He died in Spencer, IN. He married Nancy Meek 26 Feb 1839 in Wayne Co., IN. She was born about 1818 in Indiana.

20. Basil Meek was born on 20 Apr 1829 in New Castle, IN. He died 16 Apr 1922 in Sandusky Co., OH. In 1853, at the age of 24, he was elected county clerk, and moved from Cataract Village to Spencer, the county seat of Owen County. Basil and Cynthia are listed with his mother in the 1850 census living next to Abner Brown. He is listed in the 1860 census of E. Division, Owen Co., IN. In 1861 was admitted to the bar and formed a partnership with Samuel H. Buskirk. In 1864 he removed to Sandusky co., OH and he was listed in the 1870 census of Green Oak TWO, Sandusky Co., OH. He practiced law until 1879, when he located at Fremont, Ohio. He was listed in the 1880 census of Freemont TWP, Sandusky Co., OH. In 1886 he was appointed postmaster at Fremont, Ohio, which office he held for four and a half years. In 1891 he became associated with B. R. Dudrow in the practice of law. He was also president of the board of education. He was still active in 1909. He married Cynthia A. Brown on 20 Dec 1849 in Owen Co., IN,. She was the daughter of Abner Brown. She died in Aug 1861.

21. Laurinda Meek was born on 2 Jun 1831 in New Castle, IN. She died 9 Dec 1914 Living in Oklahoma City in 1902. She married Stephen Clement was born on 23 Nov 1827 in Ohio. He died on 24 Jul 1901 in Jasper Co., IA. He was the son of David Clement and Catherine Hollis.
22. James S. Meek was born on 17 Aug 1834 in Wayne Co., IN. He died 7 Apr 1921 in Indianapolis, IN. In 1841 he moved with his father's family to Owen Co., IN where he taught school, and was also traveling salesman for a number of years. He is listed in the 1860 census of E. Division, Owen Co., IN. In Aug 1862, he enlisted in the Ninety-seventh Indiana infantry as a private and was shortly afterward commissioned first lieutenant. He joined Sherman's army and in September of that year he was commissioned captain. In 1864 was made quartermaster for a division in the Fifteenth army corps at Scottsboro, AL. He was mustered out in June, 1865. He is listed in the 1870 census of Wayne TWP, Owen Co., IN. In 1870 he was elected clerk of the circuit court of Owen County, which office he held for eight years. In 1878 he began the practice of law. He is listed in the 1880 census of Washington TWP, Owen Co., IN. He retired from business in 1900, and resided at Indianapolis, IN 1902. He married Mary Ann Joslin in 1858. She was born 27 Oct 1839. She died 30 Aug 1924.
