John Alexander Meek

By Christopher A. Meek

1. John Alexander Meek was born in 1686 in Ireland. He died in 1765 in County Antrim, Ireland. Source of this information is unknown He married Elizabeth Mitchell in 1744 in County Antrim, Ireland. She died in Ninety-Six, Laurens District, SC. She immigrated to America in 1774 as a widow, with her children.

The first genealogy about this family known to this author was A Meek Genealogy, 1902, by H. B. Meek. Mr. Meek's sources are unknown. He listed the children as grand children of Matthew Meek but does not name John Alexander as the son of Matthew and father of the children. The author's primary focus was Jacob, brother of Matthew, and his 16 children. It is known today that H. B. Meek combined several unrelated family to come up with Jacob's 16 children. Therefore, one should use caution with this genealogy.

A better known book was published 60 years later. Meek Genealogy, 1962, By Carleton Meek named John Alexander Meek as the son of Matthew and father of the children listed below. However, it is known that Carleton Meek copies H. B. Meek although he added additional names. It is not known what the sources were for either author. It would appear that others before and after 1902 were involved with this genealogy. There is no known documentation to prove the connections from Matthew to John Alexander or his children.

There is no known proof that the following people were siblings:

  • 4. Samuel Meek was born in 1748 in Ireland. Settled in South Carolina. He was a loyalist and moved to Nova Scotia. See Hants County in North Rawdon, Nova Scotia census. [Note: There is no known documentation to support this and William's Loyalist claim indicates his brothers remained in 96.]
  • 5. William Meek was born in Ireland. He was a loyalist and moved to Nova Scotia in 1780. There are loyalist records discussing this person. He married a daughter of Robert Coleman. She was born about 1759. She died on 24 Oct 1828 in Nova Scotia.(source unknown)
