On April 1, 1813, he became a private in the War of 1812 in Frederick Co., VA. He joined the company commanded by Capt. Charles Brent in the 4th Regiment of the Virginia Drafted Militia, commanded by Col. Henry Beatty. He substituted his brother David. In the army records he was described as being about 18 years old, six feet tall, without beard and having light brown, slightly curly hair, slightly swarthy skin and blue eyes. He was honorably discharged at Norfolk Virginia on October 27, 1813. He apparently stayed in the Norfolk area throughout his service and was paid eight dollars per month. He was also paid for the fifteen days it was estimated it would take for him to return to Frederick County; a journey of about 160 miles.
From 1825 to 1827, Leonard was an innkeeper in Frederick County. Between 1835 and 1839, Leonard and his family moved from Frederick County to Greene Co., OH. In 1840 or 1841, the family moved to Hancock Co., IN. He is listed in the 1850 census of Hancock County living next to his son, Able. About 12 years later in 1853, Leonard and Ruth along with their children (Rachel, Abel, Ruth, Leonard, Phebe, John and Thomas) moved to Jasper Co., IA. There Leonard and Ruth were charter members of the Mt. Zion Church where Leonard was the first class leader. He was a farmer for most of his life. Leonard was buried in the Slagel Cemetery in Jasper County.
Ruth applied for a pension of eight dollars per month in 1879. She apparently continued to live in Jasper County, until about 1880 when she went to live with her daughter, Lydia Starr, in Albany, IN. She died there on 10 Aug 1885 and is buried in the Strong Cemetery in Albany.
